What is an Alexa Ranking?

Alexa is a powerful well regarded (especially by a lot of advertisers) tool used to rank web site traffic. It allows you to discover how your traffic compares to other websites! A word of warning though – it is not 100% accurate. The lower the alexa ranking the higher your traffic. For example Google has a pagerank of 1 which means its the site with the highest ranking – unsurprisingly. Alexa allows you to check out not only your global ranking but also how your site ranks within any chosen country.Untitled

How do they work out your ranking?

Information is collated by looking at the browsing history of users who have the alexa toolbar installed mainly. Millions and millions of people all over the world have the toolbar installed and this is why I said that its not 100% accurate as not every computer user or blog visitor has the toolbar installed. Having the toolbar also allows you to find out the Alexa Rank of any site you visit.  The higher you rank the more accurate your ranking. Sites with a ranking under 100,000 are thought to have an accurate ranking. Untitled

Why Alexa is Beneficial to Bloggers?

Your site information on Alexa provides a lot of different information on visitors to your blog.

First up – top search queries. This is very useful for finding out which search terms bring people to your blog.

Submit your Blog

The easiest and most overlooked way of boosting your traffic is by submitting your blog to the search engines. You won't end up with huge traffic from the start but it will build up over time and you never know some of the visitors may become subscribers or regular visitors. The main search engines are:

Yahoo

Dmoz Open Directory

Google

MSN

Dmoz is one you may never heard of but its the biggest directory on the web and google and aol are some of the search engines that use their directory.

 Blog Trackback

This section is more suited to Wordpress users. A blog trackback is basically a way of informing a blogger that you've linked to their post. If they approve the trackback its listed in their comments section. Not only is it a polite way of letting the blogger know you've mentioned their post but it can drive traffic to your own blog as their readers will know that you've posted something related and hopefully check it out. So its a win win situation. How to do a trackback If both yourself and the blog you are linking to are on Wordpress you can just link in your usual way but if you for example are on wordpress and the post your linking to is on blogger (i.e different platforms) you'll need to check their post for a 'trackback url' or 'permalink' and enter it into the section on your posting area titled 'trackback url'. But it really is that simple!

Guest Post

Guest posting is another great way of driving traffic to your blog and opening up to a new audience. If you write a guest post for another blogger it gets linked to your own blog and if they've enjoyed your post they are likely to visit your blog. If you have a guest blogger posting on your site they're obviously going to promote the post which again drives traffic to your blog. Either way you'll be introducing a whole new readership to your blog. If your looking for a guest poster try adding a thread to the IFB groups page.

Twitter

Twitter is a great tool to utilise and in my opinion all bloggers should have a twitter account with the link clearly displayed in their sidebar. It's actually my top referrer. Also make sure to have a retweet facility so your readers can share all those fab posts you write with their followers. I'm always surprised when I discover blogs without share buttons and it is the easiest way of sharing a post. Set it up so that all your posts are automatically posted to twitter as its a great source of traffic and it can have a viral effect meaning it can spread quickly. Wordpress has plugins for exactly this purpose. You can do this with facebook too. Apart from the traffic building aspect of twitter it has other benefits for a blogger. I've detailed them below:

Networking - communicating and conversing with other like minded people whether that be other bloggers or people who share your interests

Business Contacts - prospective advertising clients or PR agencies for example

Blog Post Ideas - conversations can often lead to blog post ideas

Asking Questions - whether it be web design related or SEO the twitterverse is full of experts on all kinds of subjects

Fact Checking - you might need to check a certain aspect of a post and there may well be people who have the knowledge you need So as you can see Twitter really is a vital tool in blogging.

Commenting

Comment, comment, comment I can't stress this enough. But make them meaningful and genuine don't just post generic comments and add your link. Commenting is a really good way of developing a community feel to your blog as well as increasing your traffic. A lot of bloggers myself included visit the blogs of those who leave comments. You never know they may love your blog and leave a comment or follow/subscribe. It improves traffic in another way too as other readers may find your comment interesting and visit your blog which is another good reason for ensuring you only leave genuine, interesting comments. But please refrain from leaving comments telling the blogger you've followed and asking them to follow you back. This is really offputting and can make the blogger less likely to visit/follow your blog.

IFB

IFB is a vital resource for fashion bloggers. Jennine has succeeded in creating a community to network, share and learn. You can dramatically increase your traffic by actively participating in discussions and submitting your best posts for links a la mode. Check out Grit and Glamours guide to submitting to links a la mode here. IFB is also another great way of fostering relationships with other bloggers and has a wealth of resources available. Visit IFB here

SEO

Obtaining a high spot in search results is no easy feat but you can help yourself by selecting your keywords very carefully. Make sure your selecting words relevant to your post/blog. The optimum length for keyword phrases is 2 or 3 words as almost two thirds of searches are of that length. Another important aspect for SEO is to include your keywords in your blog post title. So those of you who choose song titles or literary quotes for post titles are missing out on increasing your search result placing. Titles are highly searchable, that's not saying you have to do this with every post but it is important if you want to fully utilise SEO. Another way of capitalising on SEO is by renaming your images to include your keywords. Many people find my blog through google image search and that is why. Don't make the titles overly long though. The last thing to mention is - DO NOT tag your posts with tonnes of different keywords as the search engines can penalise users who do this. Use only relevant keywords.

Subscription

Different readers have a preference for different methods of subscribing so utilise all the different ways of subscribing and display them prominently on your blog. I'm always surprised at the vast amount of blogs without an email subscription form its so often overlooked but its actually my favorite way of subscribing. The other ways of subscribing are :

Google Friend Connect

Bloglovin

RSS

Kindle (check out my post on setting up your blog on kindle here)

Subscribers increase the amount of visits to your blog so they are a vital part of building traffic (and a community). They keep readers updated and encourage return visits. I hope this guide is useful and if you have any questions or feedback leave me a comment!

I spoke a little about the importance of keywords in part 2 but now I'm going to delve a bit deeper into the world of keywords.

Keywords are the most important aspect of SEO. Choosing the correct ones is imperative for high rankings and therefore more traffic. Your biggest hurdle will be deciding which keywords best describe your content while bringing you the most traffic.

Choosing Keywords

The key to good rankings is in your choice of keywords. One word keywords aren't a brilliant idea as competition is high. For example if your site is about budget beauty focusing on the keyword 'beauty' would be ill advised as competition for that keyword is extremely high. You'd be better off using the keywords 'budget beauty blog' as the amount of people referred to your site will be higher. It is best to aim for less competitive keywords as you'll appear higher in results. It is no use being ranked at 5000 for a particular keyword because no-one looks through 5000 results. When deciding on keywords use Google's Keyword Tool to find out how competitive certain search terms are. But remember don't choose keywords that aren't relevant to your content. But do look at how many searches per month a particular keyword/phrase is getting. After all if only 5 searches per month are performed for a certain phrase it is hardly worth your time optimising for it.

Density

Keyword density is very important. You need to make your content keyword rich to ensure it ranks well. Keyword density let's search engines measure how relevant a site is in relation to a keyboard. I recommend using the keywords 2-3 times within a post if the search term is a popular one or 1-2 times if it is a less common search term. But don't add too many keywords otherwise it will affect your writing in a negative way.

Keyword Location

The location of keywords is vital too. Keywords in titles, headings and the first paragraph of content matters more than keywords elsewhere. This is because these areas matter more to the search engines than ordinary text. It is also a good idea to have your keywords in your post or blog url. If you've not yet bought your own domain and are about to I'd suggest having a keyword or two that relate to your sites content in your domain address. As default Blogger post urls already contain post titles in the url structure so if your optimising your post titles with keywords then your url will be optimised too.

So that's it for part 4, stay tuned for part 5!

Links are especially important in SEO. Search engines assume that the more sites that link to you, the more popular a site. And as I said in Part 2 popularity can mean you receive a higher ranking. So building links is imperative if you wish to benefit from a higher search result listing. Here are some facts to consider:

The more popular the site, the more importance search engines place on links from them. So in essence you'll achieve a higher search ranking by being linked to by popular sites.

Links from sites that cover similar subjects to your own matter more to search engines. For example if your a fashion blog and your linked to by another fashion blog thatll matter more to the search engines than if your linked to by a website about cars.

Anchor text attached to your link is also vital.

Links from trustworthy sites gives you an advantage in search rankings.

Choose which sites you link to very carefully. Linking to spam sites can have an adverse influence on your search ranking.

There are many ways to gain more links to your site. Obviously first and foremost create quality well written content that others will want to share. We call these type of links - editorial accumulation links.

Another way to gain links is to submit your sites to directory sites like blog catalog, wikio etc.

Links can also be created through commenting on blogs (no spam commenting please but thoughtful content led comments), profiles on forums and signatures on forums. They don't carry the same weight as other link methods but they're still worthwhile.

So in summary your link building tactics should include adding your site to directories, asking other sites to link to you and exchanging links with other sites. Choose who links to you carefully though as lots of links from spam sites can make the search engines think that you too are spam. Sites labelled as spam can get penalised in search results.

In Part 2 of my guide to SEO we're going to look at how your site's design can influence your search results & lots more.

Search engines aren't manned by human beings so they don't view the content in the same way as you or I. When crawling your site for indexable content the only parts they can see is content that is in HTML form. Images and flash are pretty much invisible to them that is why it is so important to assign your images alt attributes to ensure they're searchable. CSS styling of images will also ensure they are seen by the search engines. If you post a lot of relevant videos i.e. tutorials then it is a good idea to accompany these videos with a text description. There is a way to check what information the search engines can see by viewing a cache version of your site. To do this type cache:yoururl and it will display a copy of your website as it is seen by the search engines.

For example here's a standard and cached version of Girl Does Geek.

[caption id="attachment_212" align="aligncenter" width="600" caption="standard"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_213" align="aligncenter" width="600" caption="cached"][/caption]

You'll notice that my page looks the same to spiders as it does to human visitors thanks to the CSS styling that I use to build my design. But if you look at the site below you'll notice that hardly any of the content shows up when viewing the cached version as the site is predominantly flash-based.

[caption id="attachment_211" align="aligncenter" width="600" caption="standard"][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_209" align="aligncenter" width="600" caption="cached"][/caption]

A good link structure is also imperative if you'd like to maximise your blog's potential and attract new readers through search results. By this I mean that the search engine spiders must be able to reach all pages on your website from any other page if you wish those pages to garner search result listings. This isn't really necessary for some pages as you don't really need your contact me page to appear in search results but for some pages it is necessary. A text-based navigation system is especially useful for this reason.

Keywords are pretty darn vital to searches. The whole search process is based on those magic keywords. When the spiders crawl the internet  and index its content they create a database for each keyword. So instead of searching the whole of the internet they'll search the database related to the keyword that people are searching for. So it is of course wise to use keywords carefully as they're key to a good ranking. To best benefit make sure to:

  • Use the keyword in your post title (title tag) as close to the beginning of the title as possible.

  • Make sure the keyword features in the body of the post at least 3 times.

  • The keyword should appear in bold at least once in your post and once in the "alt" attribute of an image.

  • Keywords should also appear in the url of your post (this is why descriptive urls are so important).

Now let us delve a little deeper into title tags. Titles are meant to be a short description of a page or posts content. They are useful for searchers and particularly important for SEO. So here are some tips on using title tags.

  • Keep titles to under 70 characters as that is as long as search engines can handle. Any longer and the end of the title won't appear in search results.

  • The closer to the start of the title that a keyword is, the more like a user is to click on the link.

  • Create a title that encourages click through. So descriptive but inviting post titles are a must.

Lastly for Part 2 I'll explain what a meta description is. Basically it is a short description of a post or pages content and it appears underneath the title in search results. It is good practice to keep it to under 160 characters as like the title search engines are limited to a certain number of characters. If like me you use Thesis the post pages comes in-built with a field for adding your meta description. Other WordPress users may wish to use the All-in-One SEO plugin to alter their meta description. Meta description doesn't effect where you appear in search results but it is important for drawing in readers and encouraging click-through. So make it good.

So that's Part 2 done and dusted. Hope your head isn't hurting from all the SEO knowledge coming your way as there is plenty more to come. Part 3 is on its way very soon.

SEO

In this 8 part series I'm going to teach you all about the ins and outs of SEO so that you can understand SEO fully and use this new understanding to help your blog achieve a higher ranking which will then send more traffic your way. I won't be skimming through it. This guide will provide you with a fairly in depth knowledge of SEO. SEO can seem like a foreign language to some but I hope by writing clearly, simply and concisely that you'll all gain a better understanding of the mechanisms involved.

So let's get started!

First of all let's look at how search engines work. When you visit Google for example and type in a search term the search engine has to search billions of pages and documents. From this search the engine then has to rank them in order of value. To do this it ranks each result by importance and by relevance. Hundreds of different elements can make up your ranking and I'll be exploring these factors in detail throughout this series.

SEO
Different search engines generally use different factors to determine the importance ranking of a particular site. But the most common way is to classify importance as popularity. The more popular a site, the higher its importance ranking. They assume that if a site is popular its because the information on that site is of value.

The ranking system is comprised of algorithms. Yes Mathematics makes its way into SEO! The difficulty is that search engines don't disclose the factors that make up the algorithm and for good reason as there are those who would abuse it. But SEO experts have deduced some of the factors involved through insight and research.

So here's some tips on improving your ranking:

  • Update regularly

  • Increase the number of sites linking to you.

  • Write content for users NOT search engines

  • Use a menu made up of text links. Every page of your site should be accessible via text links from every other page.

  • Create content that is clear and accurate.

  • Make post titles descriptive. Song titles for outfit posts will NOT boost your rank.

  • Make 'alt' tags descriptive. Images have alt tags. Just look in the HTML editor when you add images to a post.

  • Don't have more than 100 links on any page of your site.

That's the end of Part 1. But that is just the tip of the iceberg. Remember you can Follow via BlogLovin, Like me on Facebook or sign up by Email to be informed when the next installment goes live.
